senators like john mccain have made similar statements to what scott said. you're a republican governor along with other republicans around the country want congress to stop the sequester, stop these cuts. but i just have to be honest with you, there are too many republicans in congress right now who refuse to compromise even an inch when it comes to closing tax loopholes and special interest tax breaks. and that's what's holding things up right now. keep in mind, nobody's asking them to raise income tax rates. all we're asking is to consider closing tax loopholes and deductions that the speaker of the house, john boehner, said he was willing to do a few months ago. he said there's a few loopholes and deductions you could close, said you could raise $800 billion, a trillion by closing loopholes. we're not even asking for that muff. all we're asking is that they close loopholes for the well-off and well-connected, for hedge fund managers, oil companies or corporate jet owners who are all doing very well and don't need these tax loopholes so we can avoid layin

it's personal, frankly, john mccain was very clear about this on another network yesterday, carol. he and many other republicans have not gotten over the fact that when hagel was in the senate he was absolutely against the rough war, never mind the americans ended up against the iraq war as well. this is something that he's never been forgiven for. and secondly, it's political, because back to what jason said, and i completely agree. this is a republican party who is hell-bent on not ever willingly giving president obama what he wants. >> right. exactly. >> and there's a big danger here because the american people were very clear during the election that they want the two parties to work together. and the republicans have only obstructed and said what they're against. they still have not told us what they are for. >> right. >> el, l.z., you mentioned earlier that john mccain spoke in glowing terms of chuck hagel just a few years ago. and he already knew about that iraq war thing? >> right, he was before hagel before against him. he pulled a john kerry on us. this is what america ha

he needs to take a bold idea that he and john mccain were pitching around in 2008, which is a promise to change all the delete of cars. the reason we can't get substantive climate change is because we can't convince the car industry that it makes sense financially. obama can do a lot. he should do something that provides jobs and cleans the air, not just talk policy. >> that sounds so simple, anna. >> it sounds simple, but it's not. good luck trying to pass any legislation through congress that doesn't come from congress. right now some of the controversial issues that stand a glimmer of hope are immigration and some aspects of gun control. in congress themselves they have found common ground and are pushing it themselves. unfortunately the reality is that president obama right now has the reverse midas touch. everything he touches turns to dirt. >> everything turns to dirt, pete? >> well, listen. i would first ask for everybody to put up their hands on this panel if they believe is man is the biggest factk factor contributing to climate change. no, we're not all putting our hands up?

senator john mccain blasted hagel's performance before the committee. >> the performance before this committee was the worst that i've seen of any nominee for office. he refused to answer a simple straightforward question. as to whether the surge was a success or not and whether he supported it or not. >> in london, there is a new phone-hacking scandal at a tabloid already brought down by hacking. we're talking about rupert murdoch's old newspaper "news of the world." six former staffers have now been arrested, accused of listening to people's private voice mails. the victims have not been identified in this case. now, police say the incidents happened somewhere between 2005, 2006, that is around the same time "news of the world" was implicated in a much bigger hacking scandal involving crime victims, celebrities, even the royal family. actor matt damon is on strike, not from hollywood, but from the bathroom. >> until everybody has access to clean water and sanitation, i will not go to the bathroom. yeah? >> what? >> i'm not going to go to the bathroom. >> whoa. >> yeah, go ahead. >>
